Shropshire Council has an updated strategy document out for discussion.

========================================================================
SHROPSHIRE ENVIRONMENTAL ALLIANCE

Those of you who responded to the SCS will already know that it has been redrafted with substantial changes.   The new draft was officially launched at the Shropshire Partnership Standing Conference at Shirehall last Monday which was attended by a very broad cross-section of interests including 7 members of the Alliance working group.

Major changes are:
  • A simpler, more digestible document.
  • Only 3 key priorities    -    "Enterprise and growth, with strong market towns and rebalanced rural settlements".                                      -
  •  -     "Responding to climate change, and enhancing our natural and built environment".

 -     "Healthy, safe and confident people and communities".
  • A further 3 month consultation period.

The new draft document should be available to download from the Council's website ( and will be available here)  from 19/11 and consultation on this will continue until 23/2/10.
This is all very encouraging - it shows the Council have listened to the initial responses (over 1000 apparently) and made significant changes to the strategy.   However we still have a long way to go to embrace the cultural shift that will be required to enable truly sustainable communities to grow and thrive.

Robin Thompson, Chair of Shropshire Partnership, opened the Standing Conference.   The main address was given by Richard Davies from Marches Energy Agency and included many inspiring and useful ideas for tackling climate change that the Council and local communities can adopt.   You can download Richard's presentation from http://www.slideshare.net/MEA/standing-conference-9th-november-mea-richard-davies
   Richard answered questions and we then broke into 3 theme groups chaired by the respective portfolio holders supported by senior officers.   Keith Barrow, Leader of the Council, and Celia Bahrami, Director of Shropshire Partnership gave short addresses to conclude the evening; the new Chief Executive, Kim Ryley, was also in attendance.

Please stay involved in the extended consultation process and lets work together to help our Council create the best possible sustainable community strategy.

The SEA Working Group plan to meet again in early December to consider further joint action.   If you would like to join the Working Group please get in touch with Paul Morgan (01588 673738 paulmorganrma@yahoo.co.uk).

Yours,            David Currant
