Host a Green Communities Training Course
This year the Energy
Saving Trust Green Communities service (formally
CAfE) is giving community groups the opportunity to host their own Green
Communities course. By hosting a training, Green Communities will
be able to provide your group with a bespoke course enabling you to improve
your knowledge of energy and develop a community energy project. Best of
all it’s free of charge!
Green Communities courses can cover project
planning and delivery of a community energy project; energy efficiency;
sustainable energy use and renewable energy technologies; how to conduct
energy audits for community buildings and old or listed buildings; funding
a community energy project; and how to get involved with the local authority
planning process.
Previous hosts have included local community
and environmental groups, local authorities and parish councils who themselves
host or are involved with local community energy projects.
On the day Green Communities will provide
a trainer, the training resources and manuals. As hosts, all you have to
find is a venue and the delegates. We can also provide up to £150 towards
lunch and refreshments for your group.
Green Communities is looking to run courses
throughout the country and are now keen to find new groups and locations
to hold future events. To enquire about holding your own Green Communities
Partnership Training course, please call to speak to one of our advisors
on 0844 848 0077 or email greencommunities@est.org.uk

Calor Village of the Year®
The Calor Village of the Year® competition gives the UK’s smaller communities the chance to put their village through its paces.
It’s a search for the most vibrant, enterprising and sustainable communities, but as with all competitions, it’s the taking part that counts. All entrants reap real benefits from working together as a village, engendering a genuine sense of community spirit.

Useful sites - www.funderfinder.org.uk www.cafonline.org and www.dsc.org.uk (these have a registration fee to use but if you approach the community council they should be able to help you access them for free and will be able to help you find information. grantsnet.co.uk is a free grant finder website. The Community Council are able to help you with application forms if you are stuck on how to best "sell" your project, although they did recommend it is always worth speaking to the funder directly to understand the type of information they want and the level of detail they require.
If
you require help from Shropshire Council with funding applications the
New Community Working Officers will be able to help you, these are
linked to the area partnerships.
Another
useful thing to remember about looking for funding is that some people
may be able to offer time or resources but not actually money (this can
be used as in kind match for grants). www.prohelp.org.uk is a website that can provide professionals who will offer time for good causes.
Not for profit organisations are being invited to apply for funding to install renewable energy technologies (such as wind turbines and solar panels) and energy saving measures (such as roof and cavity wall insulation). Under the new Community Sustainable Energy programme £8 million will be available to install microgeneration technologies and energy efficiency measures (capital grants) and £1 million for project development grants. The maximum capital grant available is £50,000 or 50% of the project costs. The maximum project development grant is £5,000 or 75% of the study cost - whichever is lower. The funding programme is being managed by the Building Research Establishment on behalf of the Big Lottery Fund's "Changing Spaces" Programme. Project development grants (for studies investigating the feasibility of installing any combination of the technologies ) will be awarded on a first-come first-served basis until all funds are spent. Capital grants will be awarded on a competitive basis at quarterly selection panel meetings. The next application deadline is 7th August 2009.
