Green Party campaigners on Pride Hill on Saturday

Rosebank and Jackdaw heat deaths 'would kill most of the population of Shrewsbury'

Campaigners are calling on Julia Buckley MP to oppose new oil and gas licenses in the North Sea, including the Rosebank and Jackdaw.

Campaigners in Shrewsbury are calling on Julia Buckley MP to oppose new oil and gas licenses in the North Sea, including the controversial Rosebank and Jackdaw fields off the coast of Scotland.

On Saturday, campaigners took to the streets of Shrewsbury and gathered a hundred petition signatures asking their MP to join colleagues opposing new North Sea oil and gas. On Monday the consultation into Rosebank ends, with a decision on both projects from the government expected in September.

It comes as new figures show that emissions from Rosebank and Jackdaw would cause so many heat deaths it would be equivalent to killing most of the population of Shrewsbury.

Jim Reekie, who launched the petition on behalf of the Shrewsbury Green Party, says:

‘We’ve seen a record number of wildfires this summer including in Shropshire. The science is really clear: new oil and gas in the North Sea won’t lower our energy bills or make us energy secure, but will make future summers even hotter than this one. A recent report from Oxfam showed that burning all the oil and gas from Rosebank and Jackdaw would result in 65,495 excess heat deaths – that's like a death count close to the population of Shrewsbury! We’re calling on Julia Buckley MP to join other Labour MPs who have signed the Stop Rosebank pledge.’

The Rosebank and Jackdaw fields are being seen as a key test of Andy Burnham’s climate commitments with speculation that he may decide to backtrack on the Labour manifesto promise to halt all new oil and gas licenses.

Shrewsbury Green Party Councillor Julian Dean says:

‘On Friday evening, mobile phones across the UK received an emergency message from the government about the high risk of wildfires. Andy Burnham’s emergency plan? To temporarily ban the sale of disposable bbqs. It’s a joke! We’ve already seen 2,700 UK deaths this summer from excess heat. The emergency services are being stretched to breaking point. NHS staff are fainting in overheated hospitals. Lakes and rivers are drying up. We need every Labour MP, including Shrewsbury’s to tell the PM to stop listening to Trump’s “drill, baby, drill” nonsense and commit to rejecting new fossil fuels.’

Campaigners have written to Julia Buckley MP asking her to outline her position. A copy of the letter is here.
