A leading UK climate scientist is coming to Shrewsbury in January to talk about emissions, carbon budgets, and the coming ‘climate revolution’.

Kevin Anderson is Professor of Energy and Climate Change in the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester and a former Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. He has previously advised the Prime Minister’s office on carbon trading and contributed to the development of the UK’s Climate Change Act.

Professor Anderson’s work on carbon budgets has been pivotal in revealing the widening gulf between political rhetoric on climate change and the reality of rapidly escalating emissions as the world accelerates towards 2C of warming.

He will be giving a one-off talk in Shrewsbury on 22 January at a special public event hosted by the Shrewsbury Green Party.

Councillor Emma Micklewright, coordinator of the Shrewsbury Green Party, says:

‘To have a scientist of Professor Anderson’s standing join us in Shrewsbury is very exciting and we know this will be a hugely informative and potentially very sobering presentation. Kevin has repeatedly warned that the climate crisis is now accelerating so rapidly that there is no version of the future that is non-radical. Here in Shropshire we’re already seeing the impacts of climate breakdown from devastating flooding to farmers dealing with the second worst harvest on record in 2025. We hope that Kevin’s talk will inspire local residents, councillors, and our MP to push harder for climate action locally and nationally that matches what the science says is necessary to avoid disaster.’

Bookings for the talk have already exceeded expectations, with only a handful of tickets left. The event is being held at Abbeygate Hall at the Shropshire Wildlife Trust in Shrewsbury on 22 January at 7.30pm.
