Shrewsbury Greens head to Gorton and Denton to get local plumber elected

16th February 2026

Members of the Shrewsbury Green Party visited Gorton & Denton for a canvassing session on what was one of the coldest, wettest days of the campaign so far.

Members of the Shrewsbury Green Party visited Gorton & Denton in Manchester on Sunday for a massive canvassing session that saw 7,000 doors knocked, on what was one of the coldest, wettest days of the campaign so far.

Hundreds of Greens from across the country, including dozens from Shropshire, have been flocking to the constituency in the suburbs of Manchester ahead of a battle that is being dubbed “Greens vs Reform”.

Jim Reekie, membership officer for the Shrewsbury Green Party who joined several other Shropshire residents in the constituency, says:

‘It was amazing seeing so many people braving the elements in Gorton & Denton on Sunday to get the Green message across. We travelled up from Shrewsbury to help because this by-election feels like it could be a bell-weather for the whole country. Do people want the hope for a better future represented by the Greens, or the division and hate offered by Reform? I've never seen so many Green Party signs in people's gardens, so that gives some indication of how well the campaign team is doing.’

Green Party candidate Hannah Spencer, a Trafford councillor and plumber, joined canvassers on Sunday with her rescue greyhounds, one of whom used to be raced at the local track. Reform UK candidate Matt Goodwin, a GB News commentator and political analyst who lives in London, is running against her in the hotly-contested by-election triggered after the resignation of Labour MP Andrew Gwynne.

Shropshire Green Councillor Julian Dean says:

‘The polls in this by-election are neck and neck, but the bookmakers now have the Greens ahead with a 71% chance of winning. Getting people out to the polling stations on 26 February is vital, which is why it's great to see Shropshire Greens joining the battle in Gorton & Denton. It's an election where every vote will really count.’
