The North Shropshire Green Party has launched one of the biggest local election campaigns Oswestry has ever seen.

Cllr Duncan Kerr, the Co-ordinator of the North Shropshire Green Party explained:

“Locally we have seen massive support for the Green Party and the local Committee is delighted to announce that it has already approved candidates for fifteen of the eighteen seats on the Town Council and for the four Shropshire seats in Oswestry along with St Oswald’s.

Our candidates are of all ages and from all walks of life. Many will already be known to you. From community activists like Jonathan Upton and Gemma Cassin; to health workers like Josh Cockburn and Samantha Chadwick. Familiar faces in traders like Steve Watts; local teachers like Sian Kerr and young people like Georgia Stackhouse and Merrick Rose. They include people who are former members of all of the other three major parties who have come together with a shared vision and passion to deliver a better future for our great town”.

The Shropshire Council elections were last contested in 2017 when the Conservatives had the very narrowest of margins in West and South Oswestry. The current mayor of Oswestry, Duncan Kerr will once again be contesting South Oswestry where his vote has risen at every election since he first stood in 2013. His fellow Councillor Mike Isherwood, who Chairs the Town Councils Planning and Development Committee, will be standing for the incredibly marginal Oswestry West seat where the margin of victory was just eleven votes. In Oswestry East a really fascinating election is in prospect as Jay Moore, well known for his passion and activities for the youth of the town, will be standing alongside Olly Rose who has nearly twenty years’ experience of co-ordinating a help at home service for Age UK. Olly and Jay are both active town councillors. St Oswald which covers Morda, Maesbury and Trefonen has been represented by the same Councillor for twelve years, once without even an election. Rosie Radford, well known in the town from her market stall and deli, and Chair of the Town Council’s Markets and Town Centre Committee, will be challenging for this seat to ensure that residents in these rural areas also have the opportunity to pass judgement on Shropshire Council.

Duncan concluded by saying “The Green Party has been delivering leaflets and working hard over the last four years to give the people of Oswestry a genuine alternative at these local elections. If you, like us, love the town of Oswestry and want to unlock its potential and dynamism then please give a Green Councillor the opportunity to show you the difference they can make”.
