Extinction Rebellion protest

Shrewsbury Town Council declares climate emergency

28th March 2019

At a packed meeting of Shrewsbury Town Council on Monday, it was agreed that the Council:-

  1. Supports the Declaration of a Climate Emergency
  2. Pledges to make the Council carbon neutral by 2030
  3. Calls on Westminster to provide powers and resources to make this possible
  4. Signs up to the Covenant of Mayors
  5. Requests that the Finance and General Purposes Committee develops a detailed Action Plan in pursuit of the above objectives and reports back within 6 months.

The motion was put forward by Labour Councillor Alan Mosley with the support of the Green Party.

A demonstration, organised by eXtinction Rebellion, outside the Guildhall prior to the meeting was well-attended with almost 200 people listening to speakers from eXtinction Rebellion, Friends of the Earth and the Green Party. The assembled masses were greatly enthused by the singing of the Clarion Choir.

Although the main motion was passed, an addendum by Green Councillor Julian Dean calling on Shrewsbury Town Council to withdraw its support for the North West Relief Road was rejected.

The full text of the motion, as well as photos from the event, can be found here.
